Ever wondered what happens when you put passionate entrepreneurs, seasoned business owners, and community leaders in one room? Magic happens—and that’s exactly what unfolded at our Ready, Set, Start Strong! business forum at the Donnybrook Hotel on April 30th.
The energy was palpable as business minds from across Donnybrook Balingup gathered to tackle a crucial question: How can we better support our region’s business ventures? What areas are missing and make new connections with others.

The evening featured a dynamic mix of presentations, roundtable discussions, a little networking bingo, and valuable networking opportunities that connected new entrepreneurs with established business owners.

Local success stories took center stage as three business leaders shared their journeys:

  • Kiri from Move with Life Wellness revealed her secrets to maintaining wellbeing while building a thriving business — success shouldn’t come at the cost of your health!
  • Jesse Richards shared insights from SW Property Management’s early days, highlighting that seeking support, developing skills, and planning are crucial for new business owners.”
  • Barry Green demonstrated how local radio, Donnybrook Balingup Community Radio and Western Tourist Radio, can transform a business’s community presence, turning listeners into loyal customers through the power of storytelling.

What began as a start-up focused event quickly blossomed into a think tank for regional growth. Conversations sparked exciting possibilities for visitor engagement—from caravan-friendly initiatives to self-guided tourism trails that could put our businesses on the map.
“Fantastic evening, very well organised and some great ideas coming forward,” said Derek from The Fine Timber Company. Mel from SW Property Management added, “It was a great opportunity to catch up with other business owners and meet new members. The activities and information available were interactive and engaging.”

The presence of Shire CEO, Nick O’Connor and Shire President, Vivienne MacCarthy highlighted the powerful connection forming between local government and our business community—a partnership that promises real results.
DBCCI President Iain Massey emphasised: “It’s clear that people are passionate about seeing new businesses succeed — and equally passionate about building a region that supports them to do just that.”
